Teachers now earn 26.9% less than other college graduates, the widest gap on record. Adjusted for inflation, the average teacher made $1,447 weekly in 2023—just 73 cents for every dollar earned by peers in comparable professions.

The disparity has tripled since 1996, when the pay gap stood at $300. This erosion of earnings outpaces even the gender wage gap, where women earn 82% of men's wages.

Chronic underpayment exacerbates America's teacher shortage, with compensation failing to reflect the profession's educational requirements. The Economic Policy Institute's findings reveal a systemic devaluation of educators amid rising demands for qualified instructors.
